Tigre Page 13
“I’ll do anything.” Kat had jumped at the offer. “You’re our last hope.” It was hard keeping the cat and her husband separated, and Amanda Blake spent a lot of time locked in the bedroom or the bathroom or the garage. The cat should be free to roam—and Tigre should not have to worry about getting clawed and bitten.
They’d decided to allow Psy to try to tap into the cat’s consciousness.
The mind-reading Verital continued to pet the purring cat who gazed up at him with hero worship—so different from the aggression she exhibited toward Tigre. Psy scratched behind her ears and then pressed his index and middle fingers to the cat’s temples. He closed his eyes.
Amanda Blake’s eyes got real big. “Meow?”
As if in REM sleep, Psy’s eyes moved beneath his lids. His nostrils flared. The room got so quiet, Kat could hear the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.
Several long minutes later, Psy opened his eyes. He released Amanda Blake. He gave her a pat and settled her on the floor.
“Well?” Kat asked.
“She was jealous.”
“Of Tigre? I kind of gathered that.”
“She felt he’d supplanted her in your affections and feared you were going to send her back to the animal shelter. She hated it there.”
“I wouldn’t do that!” Getting rid of Amanda Blake hadn’t ever been something she’d considered. She was pissed off at the cat, but she loved her. She’d made a commitment to her.
“That’s what I conveyed,” Psy said. “I also told her Tigre wished to be her friend, too, and she should apologize.”
“You were able to talk to her? She understood?”
“Not talk exactly—although she does comprehend more words than she lets on—but we communicated through images and feelings. Why don’t you call him in and see how she acts now?”
I sure hope this works. She ran into the kitchen and opened the patio door. “We’re ready for you.”
“It’s all good?” Tigre followed her into the house.
“We’ll see!” She crossed her fingers as he tiptoed into the great room.
Amanda Blake padded over to him and wound around his ankles. “Meow?”
Kat held her breath when he bent and picked up the cat, cradling her against his chest. He gently petted her fur; she purred, butting his chin with her head.
“It worked!” he whispered loudly.
She gave a little clap of her hands. “Thank you!” She hugged a beaming Psy. Relief poured through her that they could relax and not worry about a feline sniper attack.
“I’m glad I could help. I don’t think you’ll have any more problems with her now.” He twisted his mouth wryly. “By the way, she left a hairball in Tigre’s sneakers and a dead field mouse under your dining room table.”
If hairballs and dead mice were all she had to contend with, she was lucky indeed. She moved to her husband’s side and petted the repentant Amanda Blake. “And two cats and a Tigre lived happily ever after.”
